The writing is very compelling, and if you are a person who is easily moved to tears, this book could do the trick. This premise leads to the husband facing problem after problem as he tries to keep his family from breaking apart. And again, I thought that would be pretty hard to do in a convincing way yet he does it.The story itself is about a family where the wife is terminally ill and the husband is at odds with the wife's parents. And just to nail down the fact that this is literature and not just "junk book", Stein uses car racing as a metaphor for life. The writing has a literary feel to it, so it isn't soapy. But somehow, this little "twist" just makes the story so much more compelling and moving. Now, if that sounds sort of hard to pull off - well, believe me, I was pretty skeptical. Stein basically tells a story that really could be a Lifetime made for television movie, but he makes it fresh by telling it from the viewpoint of a dog.
I read it in a day - very rare for me - and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ok, this one was oh so close to a five star book.
